Mindful sports to try in 2024
17/05/2024
The demands of today's world means it can be tricky to set aside time for fitness. Whether it's work pressure, a busy family life, caring responsibilities or social expectations, many factors can get in the way of trying out a new sport.
But movement and focus are important for wellbeing. There are many ways to incorporate these into your daily life and, according to the NHS by regularly engaging in exercise and movement you can enhance your mood and cut your risk of disease. Sports and mindfulness go hand in hand and, when an activity is regularly practised, it can increase focus and offer social interaction. Participating in a sport can also be a great way to meet others and feel part of a team, just as people do in our very own bingo community.
Whether you're starting your sporting journey or simply looking for new sports to try, there are many options to choose from in 2024. Whatever your interests, you're sure to discover an activity that resonates with your needs and helps to transform your daily hurdles into an easy ride.
Yoga
While not a traditional team sport, yoga is often practised in group sessions and offers a myriad of benefits. Through a combination of controlled movements, breathing exercises and meditation, yoga promotes relaxation, reduces tension and increases flexibility.
There are many types of yoga to choose from and you don't need to be super-flexible to enjoy the benefits.
Hatha yoga
Vinyasa yoga
Yin yoga
Iyengar yoga
Hot yoga
Cycling (or spinning)
Cycling is considered one of the best sports for focus and mindfulness as it combines a great workout with the benefits of nature. Getting outdoors can work wonders for your wellbeing, increasing mood and self-esteem, and promoting a sense of relaxation.
Whether you prefer a leisurely ride through the countryside or an adrenaline-pumping mountain biking trail, cycling is a fantastic way to explore your local area or to discover nature spots further afield. The National Cycle Network features paths and trails ideal for exploring on two wheels.
If you're more of a fair-weather (indoors!) cyclist, then why not give spinning a go instead? Offering a high-intensity workout in a gym studio group setting, spinning provides all the benefits of cardio exercise and the opportunity to meet others.
Rock climbing
Rock climbing has physical and mental challenges and is not for the faint-hearted! Scaling cliffs and boulders requires focus, strength and problem-solving skills, and it’s an ideal sport to try if you enjoy the outdoors and want to spend time with like-minded individuals.
Alternatively, if you're looking for a new sport to try but are nervous about the physical demands of rock climbing, you could always give it a go at an indoor climbing centre first. Dedicated climbing centres feature multiple climbing walls for varying abilities with safety harnesses, support and full instruction provided.
Reformer Pilates
One of the most interesting sports to try in 2024 is reformer Pilates. This type of Pilates partly owes its popularity to social media, with influencers and TikTok videos bringing it into the spotlight. Reformer Pilates involves traditional Pilates exercises with the use of specialist equipment that looks a bit like a rowing machine.
This is a great option for those who want to challenge themselves further and have a clear focus as well as those who prefer an easier alternative as the machine offers both support and resistance.
Badminton
Badminton is on the rise again with record numbers of young people participating in the sport. If you're keen to jump on the bandwagon, badminton is one of the most interesting sports to try in 2024. Originating from China, the sport involves hitting a shuttlecock over a net and, as it’s less physically demanding than tennis, it’s easy to get started at a local leisure centre or club.
This racket sport offers mindfulness through focus, physical activity and social interaction. It’s a great sport to play with a partner and young and old can enjoy it as a leisure pursuit.
Tai Chi
An offshoot of ancient Chinese martial arts, Tai Chi is a gentle form of exercise with both mind and body benefits through slow movement, breathing and meditation. During a class, you'll usually follow a series or flow of postures with a style similar to that of yoga techniques.
Because Tai Chi is low impact, it's a great sport to try for all ages and abilities, plus it's one of the best sports for building focus and being present in the moment.
Whichever new sport you choose to try, there's no doubt that engaging in physical activity is an excellent way to counterbalance the pressures of daily life. Whether it's with a relaxing yin yoga class, a hair-raising rock climb or a community spin session, finding your ideal sport can provide a focus and boost your mood. Choose one that you enjoy and can fit into your schedule so you regularly reap the benefits.
