Top tips for carving a pumpkin

16/10/2024

Halloween is just around the corner and what better way to get into the spirit than by carving a pumpkin. Whether you’re a newbie or a pumpkin pro, we’ve got some fun tips to help you up your carving game.

Picking Your Perfect Pumpkin

Choosing the right pumpkin can be tricky, but we’re here to help! Choose one with a sturdy green stem and avoid any with soft spots. Also, picking a pumpkin with a smooth surface and less bumpy skin will make the carving process much easier.

Aim to grab your pumpkin about a week before Halloween to make sure it stays fresh for longer.

Cutting Your Pumpkin

Instead of the classic top cut, why not try carving a hole in the bottom. This trick lets you pull out all the guts with ease and gives you a smooth surface to pop in a candle.

And don’t toss those insides! They’re perfect for making pumpkin pie, pumpkin soup, or even roasting the seeds for a tasty snack.

Designing Your Pumpkin

Before you begin carving, sketch out your design. Grab a pencil or a ballpoint pen, or even some tracing paper to map it out.

Be sure to take your time - carving isn’t a race! Enjoy the process and take breaks if you’re working on something intricate. To avoid injuries, always cut away from your hand.

Keep Your Pumpkin Fresh

To make sure your pumpkin lasts, try giving the inside a quick spray with a mix of water and vinegar to help prevent mould and bacteria. Spray every few days to keep your creation fresh - A little extra TLC goes a long way!

Turn your pumpkin into an Air Freshener

Give your pumpkin another purpose, sprinkle some cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves inside. Add a candle and you’ve turned your spooky creation into a unique air freshener that will have any room basking in a delicious autumnal scent.

Get Creative

Most importantly, have fun with it! Let your imagination run wild and experiment with all sorts of designs.
